How to replace a shower column: the complete guide

Replacing a shower column is not just about removing the old one and installing the new one: you also need to choose a model that is compatible with your existing installation. Here is the complete process, from choosing the new column to putting it into service.

Step 1: Identify why you need to replace your column

Before ordering a new model, it's useful to understand the source of the problem:

• Persistent leak at the connections or mixer, often due to worn seals or cartridge.
• Unstable pressure or temperature, which may indicate a thermostatic cartridge nearing the end of its life.
• Damaged finish (ingrained limescale, corrosion, flaking coating).
• Aesthetic renovation of the bathroom with no particular technical issue.

In some cases of minor leaks, simply replacing a seal or cartridge is enough, without replacing the entire column. If the column body or the faucet is affected, complete replacement is the most durable solution.

Step 2: Check compatibility before choosing the new column

Before ordering, note down the following information about your current installation:

• The center distance between the hot and cold water inlets (150 mm is the most common standard in France).
• The type of installation: exposed column (surface-mounted on the wall) or concealed (mechanism integrated into the partition).
• The available height between the floor or shower tray and the ceiling, to check that the new column fits your space.

Step 3: Remove the old column

Step 4: Prepare the water inlets

Take this opportunity to inspect and clean the wall fittings, and replace worn seals before installing the new column. This is the ideal time to correct any limescale buildup that could eventually damage the new equipment.

Step 5: Install the new column

Step 6: Test before considering the installation complete

Gradually turn the water supply back on and monitor each connection for several minutes. Also test the hot to cold water transition to check the proper functioning of the mixer.
